first family international trip - clown show hits mexico!

november 2014

the night before we were leaving to mexico, dad says, "oh shit," and throws a passport on the floor towards mom. after renewing mom and dad's passports and applying for tank's passport, dad assumed terren's expired in 10 years and realized that hers had expired just a few months earlier. dad researches our approach and tells mom we might be able to get her in but coming back out might be tricky so we leave the next morning to the aiport at 5 am. mom, misunderstanding the entire plan, walks straight up to the united line clerk and tells her the situation. dad's stomach sinks. his plan was to hope somebody would miss the expiration date; mom's plan was to hope that somebody might let us by. of course the united woman told us the party line and that we had to have a passport. BUT she probably took pity on the bleary-eyed family with 2 little kids standing in the airport at 5:45 am with one expired passport -- probably why she gave us a flight change to the next day for free, which saved us hundreds of dollars. the next day, instead of in mexico, was kickin' it in the passport agency getting a rush passport. thank goodness we will live in SF where we can get that done in a day. besides this and the completely sketchy rental car process we went through, mexico was full of water play, relaxation, ancient ruins, a great show about Mexico's history, and the Eco-Park.
