Koda’s 5th Belated Birthday Backyard Rager

"What do you want to do for your birthday, Koda? Small party with a few friends? Go to some faovrite place for the day?” we asked.

“I want to have a singing party with a campfire,” she said, “with lots of people."

And so it was planned to gather her (and our) community together in the backyard for an extended night of songs and s’mores. The unending rains of the winter of 2017 paused long enough for us to enjoy a warm night, with songs lyrics projected on a sheet hung on the garage. (thanks, Rachel & Will!).  A highlight was certainly when Brandi and Rigo sung Koda an ad-libbed version of “You are my Sunshine.” Koda was still out there after midnight, delirious from fatigue, and still gamely strumming along with her ukulele that she doesn’t know how to play. It was a fun night, and thanks to everyone that made it awesome.

The ladies of the house went to see the musical Billy Elliot at the Berkeley Playhouse, where our girls got exposed to the ideas of child labor… and the salty vocabulary of a family of coal miners in northern England. “They said the F word a lot, dad,” the girls said, “just like mom.”

The girls slept over at Po Po and Ye Ye's place for a night, so mom and dad could go out for a nice dinner at Pizzaiolo for mom’s birthday. The girls loved it, and mom and dad managed to have an adult dinner past 10pm.

The month was filled with more fun with Jahan/Siena, Tasya, Anna, Bump/Jack and Po Po and Ye Ye.
